I built a free tool that scans your site and shows which images have missing rights info — no signup needed. Might be useful to check before it happens again: novilay.com
Thanks for trying it!
The scanner crawls the site and extracts all images it finds
across the pages. For each image it checks a few things:
- Is there EXIF/metadata present with copyright or creator info?
- Is there an IPTC copyright notice embedded in the file?
- Is there structured data on the page linking the image to
a rights holder?
- Does the image have a license field or creator attribution
in the surrounding HTML?
If none of those are present, the image gets flagged as
"unverifiable" — not necessarily stolen, but undocumented.
No way to prove where it came from or whether you have
the right to use it.
"Incomplete" means some metadata exists but it's missing
key fields — like a creator name but no license info.
"Verified" means the image has enough documentation to
demonstrate rights.
It doesn't check if an image is actually stolen — that would
require reverse image search at scale. This is about
documentation gaps, which is where most liability actually
comes from.
Happy to go deeper on any specific part.
