I still remember the first time I tried coding with AI tools.
It felt magical.
Suddenly, things that used to take me three or four hours were happening in just a few minutes. A bug I would normally wrestle with for half a day was solved with a single prompt. The code flowed effortlessly, almost like music.
And now? AI can generate an entire full-stack app with one prompt.
Sounds amazing, right?
But here’s where the story changes.
When Vibe Coding Turns into a Trap
At first, I thought: “This is the future. Developers won’t lose their jobs; we’ll just work smarter.”
And I still believe that. AI itself is not the problem.
The problem is what happens when we get too comfortable, when we become vibe coders.
A vibe coder is someone who relies so much on AI and the “flow” setup (music, prompts, fast outputs) that their depth of knowledge starts to shrink. Over time, they lose the ability to do the simple things themselves.
I’ve seen it happen, people asking AI to change a button color or rewrite a single line of text. Tiny things that any developer should be able to do in seconds. And that’s when it hit me:
We risk not understanding what’s really happening in the background.
We risk shipping apps full of vulnerabilities.
We risk becoming lazy.
Where Vibe Coding Helps
Don’t get me wrong — vibe coding does have its place.
It’s great for quick prototypes.
It helps solo devs spin up small SaaS ideas.
It can turn a spark of an idea into something real, fast.
But here’s the catch: vibe coding won’t get you hired.
If you’re a student, a junior developer, or someone trying to break into the industry, companies won’t hire you for your ability to prompt AI. They’ll hire you for your ability to understand, debug, and build.
The Balance: How to Use AI Without Losing Yourself
So what’s the solution? It’s not “don’t use AI.” That’s unrealistic and, honestly, wasteful.
The key is how you use it.
Let AI write small snippets of code.
But read them carefully. Understand every line.
Connect the pieces manually into your project.
Make sure you know what’s happening under the hood.
That way, you’re still learning, still building skills, and still becoming a developer that companies can trust.
Vibe coding feels good. AI feels magical. But if we only chase comfort, we lose the very thing that makes us valuable as developers: deep understanding.
So yes, enjoy the vibes. Use AI for speed. But don’t let it make you lazy. Because the day you can’t change a button color without asking AI… is the day you’ve stopped being a developer.
