Building AI Tool Atlas: 200+ AI Tools and My Own AI Assistant

I'm building AI Tool Atlas, a platform with 200+ AI tools and a conversational AI assistant. Here's what I've learned, the challenges I've faced, and why I'm sharing my journey with fellow indie makers.

Building AI Tool Atlas: 200+ AI Tools and My Own AI Assistant

I’m Building AI Tool Atlas: 200+ AI Tools, One AI Assistant, and a Lot of Lessons Along the Way

Hey makers! 👋

I’m Alexander, the founder of AI Tool Atlas, an independent project I’m building to make discovering AI tools easier, faster, and more useful.

I want to share what we’re building, what I’ve learned along the way, and why I’m excited about where this project could go.

🚀 It Started With a Simple Problem

There are thousands of AI tools available today.

Some help you write. Others generate images, create videos, build websites, automate tasks, or write code.

But discovering the right one isn’t always easy.

You search Google, open multiple websites, compare features, and try to figure out which tool actually solves your problem.

I kept coming back to one question:

What if finding the right AI tool could be much simpler?

That question became AI Tool Atlas.

🛠️ What We’ve Built So Far

AI Tool Atlas is an English-language discovery platform designed for people who want to explore artificial intelligence without getting overwhelmed.

The project currently includes:

  • 200+ AI tools across categories including writing, coding, design, video, research, and marketing.

  • Search and discovery features to help visitors find relevant tools.

  • Tool comparisons and curated recommendations to make exploration easier.

  • AI Atlas Agent, our own AI assistant experience, designed to help users discover tools and get useful answers.

  • Mobile-friendly design with ongoing improvements to accessibility and usability.

  • Multilingual features as we work toward making the platform useful to a broader international audience.

Our technology stack includes Cloudflare Workers, GitHub, and Supabase.

We’re also experimenting with making the platform feel more like an application than a traditional directory.

And there’s still plenty of work ahead.

🤖 Why We’re Building AI Atlas Agent

A normal directory gives you a list.

But sometimes users don’t know which category to browse or which tool they need.

They might simply ask:

“I want to make YouTube videos without showing my face. Which AI tools should I use?”

That’s the kind of experience we want AI Atlas Agent to support.

Rather than forcing everyone to browse hundreds of listings, our goal is to make discovering tools more conversational and personalized.

It’s an ambitious idea, and we’re still developing and improving it.

💡 What Building This Project Has Taught Me

One of the biggest lessons has been that building a website is only the beginning.

You also need to think about design, performance, mobile usability, search visibility, security, user trust, and how people will actually discover your product.

I’ve spent time working through deployment issues, improving interfaces, refining features, and learning how different services fit together.

Not everything worked perfectly the first time.

Some changes introduced unexpected problems. Some integrations required more effort than anticipated. And some features needed to be simplified before they became useful.

But each issue taught me something.

Building in public isn’t about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about showing the process of making something better.

🌍 The Next Challenge: Finding Our First Real Audience

Right now, AI Tool Atlas is an early-stage project.

We don’t have impressive growth numbers or revenue milestones to show off.

Our focus is on building something people genuinely want to use.

We’re working on better discovery experiences, useful content, stronger performance, and potential partnerships with AI and software companies.

We’re also exploring sustainable monetization through clearly disclosed affiliate relationships.

But first, the product needs to earn people’s trust.

🤝 Why I’m Sharing This on BuiltByIndies

I believe independent makers learn faster when they share their experiences.

That’s what I like about communities like BuiltByIndies.

It’s a place to discover projects, exchange ideas, and get feedback from people who understand how challenging it can be to build something from scratch.

I’d also love to connect with developers building interesting AI products.

If you’ve created a useful AI tool, I’d be happy to learn more about it and consider it for our directory.

❤️ I’d Love Your Feedback

If you have a few minutes, please take a look:

I’d genuinely appreciate your thoughts on three questions:

  1. Is the website easy to understand and navigate?

  2. What would make the AI tool discovery experience more useful?

  3. Would you use an AI assistant to find the right tools for your projects?

And if something doesn’t work correctly, please tell me. Bug reports are just as valuable as compliments.

I’m not here to claim I’ve built the next big thing.

I’m here to build, learn, improve, and hopefully create something useful.

Thanks for reading, and good luck with whatever you’re building! 🚀
