There was one image I really didn't want to delete.
It had the right mood, beautiful afternoon light, and a desk setup that looked better than anything else in my reference folder.
There was just one problem.
It didn't belong in the scene.
I noticed this while preparing a product clip with Seedance 2.5. The idea was simple: headphones on a clean desk, a slow camera move, and soft daylight from the side.
But my references weren't nearly that simple.
I had two rooms, several product angles, a lighting shot, a movement clip, and that one extra image I kept because I liked it.
The nicest image was causing the most confusion
The extra reference had warm shadows, dark wood, and a cozy evening feel.
My actual scene was bright and minimal.
Both directions worked.
They just didn't work together.
For a while, I tried to solve that by changing the prompt. I added more detail about the room, the light, and the mood.
That made the brief longer, but not clearer.
Eventually, I removed the image.
The scene immediately became easier to describe.
Nothing new had been added. I had simply made a choice.
Now I look for disagreement
I've started doing this before writing much of the prompt.
I put the references next to each other and look for places where they disagree.
Is one room bright while another is dark?
Do two product shots suggest different finishes?
Does the movement reference feel energetic while the rest of the scene is quiet?
Not every difference matters. Sometimes contrast is intentional.
But if I can't explain why two references are pulling in different directions, I probably haven't made the creative decision yet.
That has been more useful than simply collecting more material.
I still check the less creative stuff too: whether I have the right to use the source material, whether anything is confidential, and whether recognizable people, voices, logos, or other protected material should be there at all.
And I don't treat a reference as proof that the generated result is accurate. Product details, text, branding, people, and other important elements still need checking in the finished clip.
I kept that beautiful desk image in my folder.
I just stopped using it for this scene.
Sometimes a reference can be good and still be wrong.
